Could Matt Riddle Make the Jump to AEW? Jim Ross Weighs In

Matt Riddle, a former WWE star, shared insights about an uncomfortable backstage moment he experienced with AEW president Tony Khan after his match against Zack Sabre Jr. at NJPW’s Windy City Riot Show. While Riddle has been wrestling in various promotions recently, he sees a potential return to WWE as a possibility.

However, he hasn’t explored opportunities in AEW since his release in 2023. AEW’s play-by-play announcer Jim Ross has commented on the likelihood of Riddle joining the company on “Grilling JR,” offering his perspective on why Khan might be hesitant to bring the former MMA fighter on board.

Ross acknowledged the reasons behind Khan’s hesitance, noting, “I understand Tony’s reluctance because Matt has a little baggage and how much that baggage weighs, I don’t know.” He highlighted Riddle’s talent and physical appeal, likening his look to that of Kevin Von Erich.

Ross added, “I will never say never,” but admitted that he is not privy to any discussions regarding Riddle’s potential signing. He emphasized the importance of not overlooking talented wrestlers, stating, “He looks good and he’s got a unique style. He’s got good charisma. So he brings something to the table.”

Currently, Riddle remains uncertain about his chances of wrestling in another major promotion. However, he mentioned that if CM Punk could return to WWE despite his previous issues with the company, he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of his own return. For the time being, it remains unclear if either of the major promotions is interested in signing him.
