WWE’s Rhea Ripley: Breaking Barriers and Rejecting the ‘Mold’

Rhea Ripley has experienced a remarkable rise within WWE since making her main roster debut in 2021, largely due to her distinctive appearance. In a conversation on “The Wrestling Classic,” Ripley shared how developing her unique style was crucial in shaping the beloved wrestler she has become.

“Between the first Mae Young Classic and the second Mae Young Classic, I went through a lot,” Ripley reflected. “At work, I was getting picked on, told what to do, told I wasn’t good enough and all that. I just had enough. I was trying to be someone that I knew I wasn’t, just to fit into the mold that I thought this place wanted, but I couldn’t do it anymore.”

Ripley reflected on feeling pressured to fit a mold early in her WWE career, but her decision to be authentic transformed her persona and career trajectory (WWE)

Recognizing the need for authenticity, Ripley chose to embrace her true self in her on-screen persona. With WWE management’s blessing, she cut her hair, initiating a journey to define her look.

By drawing inspiration from her favorite metal bands, Ripley eventually solidified her aesthetic, which remains a signature part of her identity today. She attributes this authenticity to the strong connection her character has forged with fans over the years.

“Each and every year that has gone by, you can see me just get so much more confident and comfortable in my own skin,” Ripley noted. “It’s not even a WWE thing — it’s like a real-life thing. I’m growing up.”

For Ripley, part of her growth has involved discovering aspects of herself that were previously unknown and learning to accept the things she cannot change. She believes this self-discovery journey has positively influenced her in-ring performance, propelling her career to new heights.
