WWE has been home to numerous legendary managers, with iconic figures like Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Paul Bearer, and Jimmy Hart often highlighted as the best. Yet, Paul Heyman and Jim Cornette distinguish themselves not only through their onscreen personas but also their strategic insight into the wrestling business.
Heyman, known for his role as the founder of ECW, and Cornette, who directed Smoky Mountain Wrestling, have both made contributions as both managers and creative visionaries. In a recent episode of the “Grilling JR” podcast, Jim Ross praised both men, specifically singling out Cornette for his enduring impact despite being a polarizing figure in the industry.
Reflecting on Cornette’s birthday, Ross noted, “He remains exceptionally sharp. When I think of the most insightful managers I’ve encountered, Cornette and Paul Heyman immediately come to mind. My time working with them was enjoyable, but there’s something particularly special about Cornette. He may stir controversy, but that’s part of his role nowadays …
It might seem odd, but I genuinely miss many aspects of how Cornette operated. His approach to booking was outstanding, and he consistently brought valuable ideas to the table. He understood the business so well that he infused logic into our projects.” Ross further remarked that Cornette’s contentious nature doesn’t concern him, as his ability to thrive in the digital age underscores his relevance and influence in wrestling today.
