Freddie Prinze Jr. Set to Reprise His Role in the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Follow-Up

The cast of the upcoming sequel to “I Know What You Did Last Summer” now includes Freddie Prinze Jr., who starred in the original 1997 horror film alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is in negotiations to reprise her role from the original film. While her contract remains unfinalized, Prinze will be joined by Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. Camila Mendes, who was initially part of the project, has stepped away due to scheduling conflicts.

The exact plot details for the sequel have yet to be revealed. The first film follows four teenagers from a small seaside town as they are stalked by a hook-wielding killer a year after covering up a tragic car accident. The film proved to be a box office sensation, raking in $125 million globally.

This success led to the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and a direct-to-video reboot titled “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” Additionally, a TV series inspired by the original is available on Amazon Prime.

In a recent reflection, Prinze disclosed that he nearly quit the original film due to the difficult relationship he had with director Jim Gillespie, whom he described as extremely challenging to work with. Prinze claimed that there was tension because Gillespie preferred Jeremy Sisto for the role he finally received.

“Every day of shooting was a struggle, and I felt discomfort throughout the entire process. However, those experiences equipped me for the industry in unexpected ways,” Prinze shared on his horror movie podcast, “That Was Pretty Scary.”

He expressed a sense of gratitude towards Gillespie for the tough experience, noting, “I’ve never encountered anyone quite like him since… no other director I’ve met has crossed those lines. It prepared me for every lesser individual in the industry.”

At the helm of the sequel is director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, recognized for her work on Netflix comedies like “Do Revenge” and “Someone Great.” She collaborated with Sam Lansky on the screenplay, which is based on a draft by Leah McKendrick (“Scrambled”). Neal Moritz will also return as a producer for this installment.

The film is scheduled for release in theaters on July 18, 2025, by Sony Pictures.
