Bong Joon-Ho’s Mickey 17 Film Starring Robert Pattinson Stranded in Space

It’s not common to receive trailers so late in the process, but I’ll gladly make an exception for Bong Joon-ho’s much-anticipated sci-fi film, Mickey 17.

The darkly comedic trailer kicks off with a memorable moment: Mickey, portrayed by Robert Pattinson, gruesomely loses his hand to a piece of space debris.

From that point forward, Mickey endures death over and over again, facing everything from industrial mishaps to being devoured by extraterrestrial creatures.

However, when multiple versions of Mickey end up alive at the same time—something that’s apparently a huge problem—chaos ensues.

The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From Academy Award-winning writer and director of Parasite, Bong Joon-ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17.

The unlikely protagonist, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), finds himself in an extraordinary situation: working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… dying, for a living.”

In addition to Pattinson portraying various versions of Mickey, the cast also features Steve Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie. The film is based on the novel Mickey 17 by Edward Ashton, with Bong Joon-ho both writing the screenplay and directing the film.

A quirky Robert Pattinson, Bong Joon-ho’s visionary direction, and sci-fi elements—count me in. However, there have been murmurs that Warner Bros. isn’t entirely sure what to make of the movie.

Mickey 17 was originally slated for release back in March, but it was removed from the schedule before being shifted to 2025.

Some speculate that the delay is due to the studio’s reluctance to allow Bong Joon-ho to release his director’s cut, instead pushing for a “more accessible” version of the film. The man is an Academy Award winner; let him work his magic.
