Though updates have slowed since James Gunn’s Superman finished filming over a month ago, an exciting new detail has emerged from an unexpected source.
During an appearance on the Capes and Lunatics Podcast, renowned Superman comic writer Mark Waid revealed that Krypto, the super-powered dog, will make an appearance in the 2025 DCU film.
Waid, famous for writing Batman/Superman: World’s Finest and the iconic Kingdom Come Superman comic in 1996, shared this news while discussing the upcoming movie.
Though he has also recently worked with Marvel on titles like Daredevil and Captain America, Waid remains closely connected to the DC Universe.
Speaking about Gunn’s approach to Superman and what excites him about the 2025 film, Waid said:
“I like Gunn’s reverential approach by and large to this kind of stuff, and you know reverential without taking it too seriously. I mean, the movie has a dog in it, a superpowered dog with heat vision.”
It looks like Superman’s iconic canine companion, Krypto, will be featured in the debut DCU film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
Gunn’s respectful but playful approach to comic book adaptations is one of the reasons Guardians of the Galaxy resonated so deeply with audiences.
He has a knack for making a group of unlikely heroes feel like a genuine family without forcing emotional connections.
If Gunn continues with that same touch in this new era of DC storytelling, fans longing for a faithful live-action portrayal of the most iconic DC characters are in for a thrilling experience.
James Gunn’s Superman has assembled an impressive cast for the DCU debut. David Corenswet will take on the role of the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will star as Lois Lane.
Other major superheroes will also appear, including Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Supergirl and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
Nicholas Hoult is set to portray Lex Luthor, the film’s main villain, while Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr., coming over from Creature Commandos and Peacemaker.
Additionally, Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern, and Wendell Pierce will take charge of the Daily Planet as Perry White.
Superman soars into theaters on July 11, 2025. Keep an eye on Collider for future updates on the film, and in the meantime, you can stream the most recent solo Superman movie, Man of Steel, on Max.
