Clara Lago, renowned for her performances in “Spanish Affair” and Andi Baiz’s suspenseful “The Hidden Face,” is set to co-star with Chilean actor Alfredo Castro in the drama “Queen of the Woods” (“La reina del bosque”), slated for the Iberseries Co-Production Forum. Directed by Luján Loioco, this project is produced by Libre Cine, an Argentine company based in Buenos Aires, in collaboration with Spain’s Non Stop, Brazil’s Cinefilm, and the U.S.-based Bosco Entertainment led by Julio Bove.
The film, a suspenseful narrative with a strong female lead, explores the emotional journey of a pregnant woman who reconnects with her dying father while isolated in a remote mountain cabin. The story focuses on her internal struggles and the unresolved issues from her past as she contemplates the kind of mother she wants to become.
Loioco, who also wrote the screenplay, aims to create a film that resonates deeply with audiences by delving into the complex emotions tied to the feminine experience. She envisions the film as a blend of reality and dreamlike suspense, designed to evoke a unique and unsettling atmosphere.
Currently in advanced stages of development, “Queen of the Woods” is scheduled to begin principal photography in June 2025, with locations in Spain and Patagonia, Argentina. The film has already achieved remarkable recognition, winning the Best Screenplay Award at BioBioLab IV in Concepción, Chile, in 2022, and participating in various other festivals and labs including Bolivia Lab XIV, Sanfic Lab XI in Chile, the Mercosur Co-Production Meet in Brazil, Sapcine VIII in Cali, Colombia, and the Extremadura Residency in Spain.
Libre Cine’s involvement with this drama aligns with its goal of producing narratives that challenge conventions and convert personal stories into universal themes across different genres.
Loioco, whose previous works include “La niña de tacones amarillos,” “Algo con una mujer,” and the series “La vida que viene” (the latter two co-directed with Libre Cine partner Mariano Turek), emphasizes the company’s commitment to creating content with international appeal. This approach focuses on highlighting gender perspectives and fostering co-productions and partnerships between Latin America and Europe.
