Les Films du Losange, a Paris-based sales and distribution company, has taken on “Resurrection,” a sci-fi detective film directed by Bi Gan. Gan, who gained recognition with his 2018 film “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” at Cannes, is back with this new project.
Starring Jackson Yee from “Better Days” and Shu Qi of “The Assassin,” the film has just completed its second shooting phase and is set to resume in the final quarter of this year.
The plot of “Resurrection” centers on a woman who, during a surgical procedure, becomes trapped in an “eternal time zone.” In this state, she discovers an android corpse and attempts to revive it by narrating stories. As the android explores these stories, its senses begin to come alive.
The film is co-produced by Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinema and marks Bi Gan’s return after the visually striking “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” which featured an acclaimed 59-minute single shot in 3D.
Among the key contributors to “Resurrection” are cinematographer Dong Jingsong, known for “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” “The Wild Goose Lake,” and “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” production designer Tu Nan, who worked on Wong Kar-wai’s “Blossoms Shanghai,” and costume designer Huang Wen-Ying from “The Assassin.” Bi’s directorial debut, “Kaili Blues,” won two awards at Locarno in 2015 and received widespread acclaim.
In addition to “Resurrection,” Les Films du Losange is managing sales for Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia,” which premiered at Cannes and is now featured in the fall festival circuit, including Toronto and the New York Film Festival.
