Volvo EX60 EV to Use SPA3 Platform – Official Confirmation

During Volvo’s recent 90/90 event, the company announced that its highly anticipated all-electric sedan, the ES90, is slated for a March debut next year. Following this, the EX60 will make its appearance as a key new model, positioned as a smaller alternative to the larger EX90.

The EX60 will compete in the same segment as the XC60, Volvo’s top-selling model to date. While the EX90 utilizes the second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the EX60 will be the inaugural model to feature the advanced third-generation SPA3.

The SPA3 platform, branded as the ‘Volvo Cars Superset’ technology stack, builds on the foundation of SPA2 with upgrades in core computing power and flexibility. This next-generation platform is designed to support a broad range of vehicle sizes—from models larger than the EX90 to those smaller than the EX30—allowing for ongoing development and production adaptability.

Volvo asserts that SPA3 will lead to reduced investment requirements and enhanced future financial performance. The scalable nature of SPA3 will foster greater synergies and improve the efficiency of core technologies, including computing systems, batteries, e-motors, and modular manufacturing. This will result in cost savings in vehicle production.

The Torslanda plant exemplifies Volvo’s forward-thinking manufacturing strategy. By centralizing all necessary production capabilities, the plant will utilize standardized components across SPA3 models, reducing complexity and boosting manufacturing flexibility. This approach is intended to streamline operations, cut costs, and enhance overall production efficiency.
