Geely EX5, the Rebranded Proton eMas 7 Twin, Set for European Debut on September 10

It’s intriguing to see the name EX5 appear on both Honda’s iconic kapchai and Geely’s cutting-edge electric vehicle. The Geely Galaxy E5, which is also known as the Proton eMas 7 (styled as e.MAS 7), will be marketed globally as the Geely EX5.

Following its launch in China last month, the Geely EX5 is set to make its international debut in Frankfurt on September 10. Specific details regarding pricing, specifications, and availability are still under wraps, with Geely merely teasing the vehicle’s “comfortable ride, impressive range, and striking appearance.”

Geely EX5 features high-tech interior with a 15.4-inch touchscreen and premium 16-speaker audio system (Geely)

The fact that the EX5 is debuting in Germany suggests a European release, though this isn’t always a guarantee for Geely’s international models. For example, the Geometry A was revealed in Singapore in 2019 but has yet to be available there.

The EX5 is expected to mirror the powertrain and battery options of the Galaxy E5. It features a front motor delivering 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. In China, two Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options are offered: a 49.52 kWh unit with a CLTC range of 440 km, and a 60.22 kWh unit with a claimed range of up to 530 km. European WLTP figures will likely show shorter ranges.

Tech-wise, the EX5 should inherit features from the Galaxy E5, including a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen powered by the Flyme Auto OS, developed in collaboration with Meizu, a smartphone company under Geely’s chairman. A premium 16-speaker Flyme Audio sound system with headrest speakers is also anticipated.

While the EX5 is likely to be introduced in European markets, it might not be available in the UK or other right-hand-drive regions. Reports suggest Proton is eyeing a return to major RHD markets with the eMas 7, but Geely’s PR head Ash Sutcliffe has refuted this claim.
