In a surprising twist at the recent 90/90 event, Volvo has rekindled interest in sedans with a sneak peek of their forthcoming ES90, set to make its debut in March 2025. This new electric flagship will succeed the aging S90, which has been in service for eight years.
Although specifics are sparse, initial glimpses of the ES90 reveal design elements inspired by the EX90 SUV, such as flush, pop-out door handles and sleek frameless mirrors. The sedan is likely to be constructed on the same second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2) as the EX90, suggesting it will share powertrain options and battery capacities.
The ES90 is anticipated to offer a range of configurations: a rear-wheel-drive Single Motor producing 279 PS and 490 Nm of torque, an all-wheel-drive Twin Motor generating 408 PS and 770 Nm, and a high-performance Twin Motor variant with 517 PS and 910 Nm.
Battery options are expected to align with those of the EX90, including a 104 kWh pack for the RWD model providing up to 580 km of WLTP-rated range and a larger 111 kWh battery for the AWD versions, offering up to 614 km. Despite potentially smaller batteries, the ES90’s lower weight and aerodynamic design could enhance its efficiency compared to the heavier EX90.
Unlike the EX90, which is produced in South Carolina, the ES90 will be assembled in Zhejiang, China, at a joint Geely-Volvo facility. This move underscores the sedan’s appeal in the Chinese market, known for its strong sedan sales. There’s also speculation that a wagon variant, potentially named EV90, may follow, continuing Volvo’s legacy in the segment.
