Volvo is making headlines with a major update for its vehicles, promising existing owners an exciting new feature. Beginning next year, Volvo will equip millions of vehicles with the latest Google services, drawing from the advanced interfaces found in the new EX90, EX30, and the revamped XC90 models.
This upgrade will impact cars running on the Android Automotive operating system, introducing a revamped home screen. Google Maps will now be prominently displayed, with phone and media controls positioned below, allowing for seamless navigation without needing to switch screens for functions like song skipping.
The update also brings a dynamic shortcut bar that adjusts based on current needs, showcasing recent apps and incorporating drive mode icons—features that were previously hidden within deeper menu layers.
Volvo’s ambitious upgrade plan will affect around 2.5 million vehicles, some dating back to 2020. This includes a wide range of models: the C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90—all of which have been advertised with built-in Google services.
The Android Automotive OS debuted on the electric XC40 Recharge, first disclosed in late 2019 and subsequently launched globally in 2020. In Malaysia, this technology was introduced with the facelifted XC60 in late 2021 and has since been expanded across the model range. As a result, a number of vehicles on the road here will soon benefit from this update. Ready for the upgrade?
