Six-Seater Tesla Model Y Announced, Production Kicking Off in Shanghai in Late 2025

Tesla is gearing up to launch a six-seater version of its popular Model Y electric SUV, with production expected to kick off in late 2025. According to Reuters, the automaker has already notified its suppliers to prepare for a boost in production at its Shanghai facility. This move signals Tesla’s response to increasing demand and competition in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market.

Originally, Tesla planned to release a refreshed five-seater Model Y under the “Juniper” project by the end of 2023, but that launch has been delayed until 2025. The decision to introduce a six-seater option comes as Tesla faces mounting competition from domestic rivals like the Zeekr 7X and Xpeng G6, which have started to capture market share. The Xpeng G6, for example, recently debuted in Malaysia, highlighting the intensifying battle for dominance in the electric SUV space.

When Tesla initially uncovered the Model Y in 2019, it featured an optional third row of seats, offering limited legroom depending on the adjustment of the second-row seats. The upcoming six-seater variant will expand on this concept, aiming to offer better space and flexibility, especially for families or those needing extra passenger capacity.

China remains a critical market for Tesla, and the introduction of this new version is aimed at reinforcing its leadership position. Currently, the Model Y is the best-selling vehicle in the country, with sales of 207,800 units from January to June 2023 alone.

In Malaysia, the Model Y is available at RM191,000 for the Rear-Wheel Drive model, RM238,000 for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive, and RM280,000 for the Performance All-Wheel Drive variant, demonstrating Tesla’s competitive positioning across multiple markets.
