The New York Jets and Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick are at an impasse as the NFL season approaches. Reddick, seeking a contract extension after being traded from the Philadelphia Eagles, has been absent from the team’s activities since the trade.
Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi shared his thoughts on “The Pat McAfee Show,” calling Reddick’s holdout puzzling. “I don’t get it. You’re just leaving money on the table. It doesn’t add up,” Lombardi remarked, noting that the Jets haven’t made any moves toward an extension and questioning why they would change their stance now.
The situation is a classic standoff. Reddick, turning 30 soon, is aiming to secure a lucrative deal before his prime years are behind him. Having consistently delivered elite performances, including at least 11 sacks in four straight seasons, Reddick believes he’s earned a big payday.
On the flip side, the Jets seem hesitant to invest heavily in a player who’s nearing his 30s and has yet to play a single down for them, especially since he’s already been with four different teams. Paying top dollar for someone at this stage of their career doesn’t align with smart team-building strategies.
However, the Jets’ defense is already strong, meaning they may not feel a pressing need for Reddick. As both sides wait to see who will make the first move, the Jets seem to hold the upper hand in the negotiations.
Whether a resolution is reached before the Jets face the San Francisco 49ers in their 2024 opener on “Monday Night Football” remains to be seen.
