R. Ashwin Details the Importance of Retaining the Impact Player Rule in the IPL

Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his support for the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), arguing that it enhances strategic elements in the game. This rule, which was a major talking point in IPL 2024, allows teams to utilize a substitute player who can make a significant impact.

Introduced in 2023, the rule has facilitated longer batting orders, leading to numerous high-scoring games. However, some players, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, have criticized the rule for impeding the development of all-rounders.

Unlike Sharma, former New Zealand cricketer Shane Bond has endorsed the rule. Ashwin shared his perspective during an appearance on Kris Srikkanth’s YouTube show, Cheeky Cheeka, stating, “The Impact Player rule is beneficial as it adds strategic depth to the game. While it may not promote all-rounders as much, it does not actively discourage their development.”

He continued, “In today’s game, it’s not common for batters to bowl or vice versa. The rule hasn’t dissuaded players from pursuing all-rounder roles. For example, Venkatesh Iyer is excelling with Lancashire, proving there are still opportunities for innovation and fair play.”

To illustrate his point, Ashwin referenced Qualifier 2 of IPL 2024, where Sunrisers Hyderabad played against Rajasthan Royals. Despite posting 175/9, Hyderabad’s Shahbaz Ahmed, introduced as an Impact Player, took three wickets, helping secure a 36-run victory.

Ashwin elaborated, “The Impact Player rule allows for tactical substitutions that can balance the game, especially when teams face challenges like dew. It also ensures that more players get opportunities, as seen with Shahbaz Ahmed, Shivam Dube, and Dhruv Jurel. While it’s not the sole factor in player emergence, it’s beneficial for the game.”
