Cubs Tweak Roster with Four Moves Ahead of Pirates Matchup

(Chicago Cubs)

The Chicago Cubs announced on Tuesday that they have called up right-handed pitchers Daniel Palencia and Keegan Thompson to the major league roster. This move coincides with placing Julian Merryweather on the 15-day injured list due to right knee tendinitis and sending Jack Neely back to Triple-A Iowa.

Palencia has struggled in his limited major league action this season, posting a 6.55 ERA across 11 innings over seven appearances. However, he did secure his first career major league save on April 7 against the Dodgers. While playing for Triple-A Iowa, Palencia has pitched in 27 games, holding a 5.46 ERA, recording three saves, and striking out 54 batters.

Thompson, on the other hand, has appeared in 13 games for the Cubs this season, maintaining a solid 3.50 ERA with one save. His performance in Iowa has been even more impressive, as he has recorded a 2.96 ERA in 20 games, covering 27.1 innings, and earned one save.

Merryweather, before his injury, had a record of 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA over 15 appearances for the Cubs this season. Neely, who is just 24 years old, recently made his major league debut on August 21 against the Tigers. In his brief stint, he has appeared in four games, but has struggled, posting a 13.50 ERA over four innings pitched.

The Cubs are set to continue their series against the Pirates on Tuesday, with the game scheduled to start at 5:40 p.m. Central Time.
