Marc Guiu left Stamford Bridge in shock with a glaring miss that could become the season’s most known blunder during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Servette in the first leg of their Conference League playoff. After Christopher Nkunku had put Chelsea ahead with a penalty just five minutes into the second half, Guiu had an open opportunity to extend the lead.
With Servette’s goalkeeper, Jérémy Frick, having been dispossessed by Guiu and no defenders in sight, the Spanish striker had a clear path to the goal. However, despite the open target, Guiu mishit his shot, allowing Frick to recover and make a save, though the shot was never on target.
Adding to his frustration, Guiu missed two additional follow-up shots resulting from his initial error. As Chelsea maintained possession and pressed forward, Guiu remained bent over in disbelief within the penalty area.
Fortunately for Guiu, Noni Madueke provided a perfect counterpoint to his miss by scoring a powerful near-post goal 20 minutes later, giving Chelsea a solid aggregate lead going into the second leg in Switzerland.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca light-heartedly commented on Guiu’s miss, saying, “I told him he probably prefers difficult goals to easy ones.” He added that Guiu, born in 2006 and the youngest member of the squad, is expected to score eventually due to his hard work and pressing efforts on the field.
