Joe D’Alessandris, Offensive Line Coach for the Baltimore Ravens, Dies at Age 70

Joe D’Alessandris, the offensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens, has passed away at the age of 70, as announced by the team on Sunday. The team had previously reported that D’Alessandris was hospitalized earlier this month due to an acute illness requiring extended treatment. Head coach John Harbaugh had noted that complications arose from surgery D’Alessandris underwent earlier in the summer.

Having been with the Ravens since 2017, D’Alessandris brought a wealth of experience from a 45-year coaching career that spanned the Canadian Football League, the World League, and college football before reaching the NFL. His previous roles included assistant positions with the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and the San Diego Chargers.

In a statement released on Sunday, Harbaugh reflected on D’Alessandris’ character, describing him as a man of integrity and faith. “Coach ‘Joe D’ made us all better,” Harbaugh said. “He was our reader at team mass, and he was beloved by everyone. He was a remarkable coach and an exceptional person, someone who was truly a joy to be around. I admired him greatly, loved him, and will deeply miss him.”

The Ravens have appointed George Warhop as the interim replacement for D’Alessandris earlier this month.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta expressed his sorrow, stating, “Today is a sad day for the Baltimore Ravens. ‘Joe D’ was a pillar of strength, a fantastic coach, and an even better person. His deep care for the team was evident, and his passion for excellence was matched by his genuine affection for his players. I will always cherish my conversations with him about football and life.”

DeCosta also remembered the moments shared with D’Alessandris on the practice field, acknowledging his role as both a teacher and friend. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joe’s daughters, family, and everyone who was touched by his remarkable spirit,” DeCosta added.
