Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a landmark visit to Kyiv on Friday, marking the first time an Indian leader has visited Ukraine in modern history. Despite the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia in February 2022, Modi’s trip comes at a critical moment, with Russian forces making incremental advances in eastern Ukraine and Kyiv continuing its counteroffensive.
During a joint press briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the war, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. “Peace can only be achieved through open conversations and negotiation. We must pursue this path promptly, with both parties coming together to resolve this crisis,” Modi stated.
He offered India’s support in facilitating peace efforts, expressing a willingness to personally contribute to these initiatives as a friend of Ukraine. Modi’s assurance underscored India’s readiness to engage actively in peace-building processes.
Zelenskyy welcomed Modi’s visit as a remarkable and symbolic gesture, reflecting Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to communicate its stance on the conflict to nations with historical ties to Russia. Both leaders described the meeting as a historic moment for Ukraine.
“This visit is extremely meaningful and supportive for all Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy remarked, acknowledging the importance of the visit in strengthening international solidarity and efforts towards resolving the conflict.
