Announcing Car and Driver’s 2024 EV of the Year

Hyundai IONIQ 5 N (Hyundai)

Schumacher. Vettel. Hamilton. Chestnut. Ioniq. These names have become synonymous with excellence, and just as these dynasties dominate their fields, Hyundai’s Ioniq series has claimed a unique position in the electric vehicle (EV) world.

When we established the EV of the Year award in 2021, we could hardly have anticipated that Hyundai would clinch the title three times consecutively with variations of the same model. However, unlike its consumer-focused predecessors—the Ioniq 5 (2022 winner) and Ioniq 6 (2023 winner)—this year’s champion, the Ioniq 5 N, offers an authentic driving experience that echoes the thrill of a classic 1980s Porsche 911 Club Sport.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N redefines EV excitement, earning the EV of the Year award with its thrilling performance (Hyundai)

While EVs are renowned for their rapid acceleration, they often lack the visceral excitement of traditional cars, with their silent operation and absence of mechanical feedback. This year’s EV competition brought forth many impressive contenders, but the Ioniq 5 N stood out, not just for its performance, but for its ability to engage the driver in a way that transcends the typical EV experience. It’s not just fun “for an EV”—it’s genuinely thrilling. Built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, the Ioniq 5 N is a beacon of excitement in an otherwise monotonous EV landscape.

Consider its specifications: 641 horsepower, a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds, a top speed of 163 mph, and the ability to cover the quarter-mile in just 11.1 seconds. Despite its considerable weight—largely due to the 84.0-kWh battery—the Ioniq 5 N delivers performance numbers that rival those of high-end sports cars. Yet, it remains a versatile five-seat SUV capable of 190 miles at 75 mph and can recharge from 10 to 90 percent in just 35 minutes on the right charger. With a price of $67,495 (plus $1000 for the matte blue paint), this car is a game-changer.

What sets the Ioniq 5 N apart is not just its raw performance but its ability to replicate the driving sensations of a gasoline-powered car. The N Active Sound+ and N e-shift features, though artificial, are meticulously designed to provide a convincing imitation of engine sounds and manual shifting. These features, combined with its rapid acceleration and responsive handling, create a driving experience that’s both nostalgic and innovative.

While some may view these simulated elements as gimmicky, they add a layer of fun that elevates the Ioniq 5 N above its competition. This EV doesn’t just perform—it entertains, offering a look into a future where electric vehicles can be just as exhilarating as their gas-powered counterparts. The Ioniq 5 N’s combination of performance, innovation, and pure driving pleasure makes it a deserving recipient of the EV of the Year award.
