Why BMW is Recalling 720,796 Cars and SUVs for Water Pump Fire Risk

BMW Cars and SUVs Recalled for Water Pump Fire Risk (BMW)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and BMW have announced a sweeping recall due to a fire risk associated with a faulty water pump. This recall affects around 720,796 vehicles, including sedans, sports cars, and SUVs, potentially putting them at risk of a fire, referred to as a “thermal event.”

The problem stems from a water pump that might be inadequately sealed, leading to potential fluid leakage into the electrical plug connector over time. This issue could result in a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

Additionally, it affects the 2012-2016 BMW 328i and 328xi sedans, the 2014-2016 328xi Gran Turismo, and the 2012-2016 BMW 528i and xDrive sedans. The recall also includes coupes such as the 2012-2016 BMW Z4 sDrive28i, the 2014-2016 BMW 228i and 228xi, and the 2014-2016 BMW 428i and xDrive, as well as the 2015-2016 428xi models.

Owners of the affected vehicles are advised that BMW will perform a free inspection. The company will examine the water pump and electrical connector, replacing them if necessary, and install a shield to prevent fluid from reaching the pump. Notifications will be sent to owners by mail. Although there have been 18 reported issues, there have been no reports of serious damage or injuries related to this defect.
