Most Trustworthy American SUV for 2024

In 2024, if you’re seeking a dependable new vehicle, the spotlight often falls on Asian brands like Toyota and Hyundai, known for their consistent reliability. However, American-made options also offer robust choices. Among these, the Chevy Equinox stands out for its blend of affordability and durability.

The Chevy Equinox is particularly for its reliability and low maintenance costs. As of now, it’s recognized as one of the most dependable SUVs available, largely due to its solid construction and efficient engine. Data from Chevrolet and other sources like J.D. Power, Cars.com, and RepairPal highlight its strong performance in terms of reliability and cost-effectiveness.

J.D. Power rates the Equinox at 90 out of 100, marking it as a top performer in its class, while Cars.com gives it a commendable 4.6 out of 5 for reliability. Common criticisms mainly concern its engine power rather than reliability, reflecting its more modest performance profile.

When it comes to maintenance, the Equinox is not the cheapest option but offers reasonable costs. CarEdge estimates about $8,929 in maintenance over ten years, aligning with industry norms, while RepairPal suggests an annual repair cost of around $537, noting issues like compressor and transmission faults.

The Equinox features a standard 175-horsepower inline-four engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. Though not the most powerful, it delivers solid performance with respectable fuel efficiency, averaging 28 MPG with front-wheel drive and 26 MPG with all-wheel drive.

Chevrolet offers a straightforward trim lineup: LS, LT, RS, and Premier. The LT trim provides the best value, adding features like remote start and a power liftgate for a reasonable upgrade cost.

If the Equinox isn’t quite right, consider the Chevrolet Blazer or GMC Terrain, which share similar reliability traits but with different size and power options. Both the Terrain and Blazer score high in reliability and offer alternatives within GM’s lineup.
