BMW Tops Tesla in European Electric Vehicle Market

For the first time, BMW has surpassed Tesla in the European electric vehicle (EV) market. In the past month, BMW delivered 14,869 new EVs across Europe, edging out Tesla by 308 units.

Tesla saw a decline in its European sales in July, with Model Y registrations dropping by 16% to 9,544 and Model 3 sales falling by 17% to 4,694. Overall EV sales in Europe fell by 6% compared to the previous year, a trend attributed by market analysts at Jato Dynamics to reduced government incentives and concerns about resale values.

In terms of sales, the Model Y was the leading EV in Europe for the month, followed by the Volvo EX30 with 6,573 units sold and the Volkswagen ID.4, which recorded 5,295 sales.

The overall European car market saw a 2% increase from July 2023, reaching 1.03 million vehicles, with SUVs making up 54% of the total sales. According to Jato analyst Felipe Munoz, the expanding range of options and the increasing availability of affordable models are driving consumers to prefer SUVs, which are seen as more comfortable and desirable.

The top-selling model for the month was the Dacia Sandero, with 22,398 sales, followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc with 19,254 units and the Toyota Yaris Cross with 17,314 units.

The Ford Puma, which was the best-selling vehicle in the UK last year, fell to 20th place in Europe as its registrations plummeted by 25% year-on-year, totaling 10,342 units.
