McKinley Crone Transitions from Fan to Pro in Exciting Debut with Orlando Pride

McKinley Crone (Orlando Pride)

Beneath the stadium lights and despite a rainy night in Cary, North Carolina, McKinley Crone took the field at WakeMed Soccer Park, realizing a childhood dream. For Crone, who had supported Orlando Pride from the start, this debut as a professional was profoundly important, marking not only her entry into the pro ranks but also her connection to the team she had always admired.

The Crone family’s deep ties to soccer in Orlando are noteworthy. Growing up, McKinley was involved in the sport as Orlando City SC emerged as a USL Pro franchise in 2010. Her involvement began when FC America, the team she played for, was invited to the second Orlando City game on April 22, 2011.

Crone’s first professional game at WakeMed Soccer Park was made even more special with her family cheering her on (Orlando Pride)

At that game, she had the unique experience of walking out with Miguel Gallardo, the Lions‘ goalkeeper at the time, which set the stage for her ongoing support for the team. Soccer was an integral part of Crone’s life, with her family deeply invested in sports.

Her father was a professional athlete, her mother competed in college sports, and her younger sister is completing her college soccer career at Lynn University. Crone’s passion for soccer was a natural extension of her family’s athletic background.

When the Orlando Pride was established in 2015, bringing women’s professional soccer to the city, Crone was thrilled. Attending games at Camping World Stadium solidified her dream of playing professionally. The experience of watching the team grow fueled her aspiration to join them.

As her college career drew to a close, Crone transitioned to professional soccer. Initially joining the Pride as a training player in 2023, she quickly realized the competitive nature of the professional game. Her time with the Pride provided valuable insights into the high level of play required at the pro level, helping her to recognize areas for improvement.

After a year of hard work, Crone earned a full contract and served as the backup keeper to Anna Moorhouse. Patience was crucial, as the NWSL’s competitive nature means only one goalkeeper can take the field at a time. Her dedication paid off on July 20, when she started in the Pride’s game against North Carolina Courage in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.

The lead-up to her debut was surreal for Crone, who felt a mix of excitement and disbelief. Playing her first professional game on a field she had previously played on during her college career added to the importance of the moment. Crone focused on savoring the experience rather than letting stress overshadow her debut.

In her first professional game, Crone excelled with five saves during regular play and two more in the penalty shootout. Her family’s presence in the stands made the night even more memorable. Their unwavering support throughout her career has been a source of strength and motivation for her.

Reflecting on her debut, Crone feels grateful for the opportunity to perform under pressure and showcase her skills. Wearing the Pride crest and representing her hometown adds a special layer of fulfillment to her professional journey.
