The energy surrounding the South Bend Saint Joseph football team is undeniable. Senior linebacker Connor Jackson observes, “It’s not every day that you see guys coming out with this kind of energy,” as he reflects on the enthusiasm driving practices, from special teams to game-deciding moments.
This year’s team is bolstered by a core of 23 seasoned seniors leading the charge. “Having experience is one thing, but it doesn’t always translate into a positive impact for the team,” head coach Ben Downey points out. “I’m thankful for the numbers, but even more so for the leadership qualities our seniors bring.”
With the Northern Indiana Conference now reduced from 12 to eight schools, Saint Joseph’s faces a new set of challenges. “We can’t let anything intimidate us,” says Jackson confidently. “Sure, we’re often smaller than our opponents, but that’s never been a reason to back down. We just need to play our way, give 110%, and stay true to Saint Joe football.”
Under Downey’s guidance, the importance of the seniors’ leadership resonates throughout the program. “What’s great about our seniors is their focus on discipline and the finer details of the game,” Downey explains. “These are not always popular traits among younger players, but they understand how crucial they are, and as coaches and adults, we know just how valuable that mindset is.”
