Angels Bring Johnny Cueto Back to Big Leagues for Wednesday Night’s Series Finale in Kansas City

Johnny Cueto is set to return to the major leagues on Wednesday night when the Los Angeles Angels wrap up their series against the Kansas City Royals. The 38-year-old pitcher was a key figure in the Royals’ World Series win nearly a decade ago.

Before Tuesday’s game, Angels manager Ron Washington confirmed Cueto’s call-up from Triple-A Salt Lake for the start. Cueto hasn’t played in the majors since last September, following a disappointing season with Miami.

Washington acknowledged Cueto’s focus right now is on pitching, rather than stepping into a leadership role immediately. “I’m not sure if he’ll be a leader right away,” said Washington, “but if he sticks around, he could guide our younger players.”

The Angels turned to Cueto due to recent rotation struggles, including Jose Soriano’s injury and Patrick Sandoval’s earlier elbow surgery. Washington hopes Cueto can fit in and share his experience with younger teammates, though many of them may not be familiar with his impressive career.

Earlier this season, Cueto faced some challenges with Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers’ system but showed improvement at Salt Lake. He posted decent stats, giving up eight runs on 27 hits over 23 1/3 innings.

The veteran pitcher’s storied career includes stints with six MLB teams, two All-Star appearances, and a crucial role in the Royals’ 2015 World Series win, where he threw a complete game in Game 2 against the New York Mets.
