Brent Honeywell, a right-handed pitcher for the Dodgers, was placed on outright waivers and subsequently assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, as noted in the MLB.com transaction log. Given his prior experience with outright assignments, Honeywell has the option to refuse the assignment and pursue minor league free agency.
Once a highly regarded prospect within the Rays’ organization, Honeywell faced a series of injuries that delayed his MLB debut. Last season, he managed 52 1/3 relief innings split between the Padres and White Sox.
While he had a solid stint with the Padres, his performance deteriorated with the White Sox, leading to his departure and a subsequent minor league deal with the Pirates in the offseason. During the first half of the year, the 29-year-old played with Pittsburgh’s Triple-A squad, recording a 4.85 ERA and a 19.6% strikeout rate over 39 innings.
Though his showing was underwhelming, the Pirates promoted him to the majors in July. After two appearances, he was designated for assignment, and the Dodgers acquired him via waivers.
With Los Angeles, Honeywell appeared in 10 games in low-leverage situations, achieving a 2.21 ERA across 20 1/3 innings despite a subpar 15.2% strikeout rate and 6.5% swinging strike rate. His spot on the roster was forfeited when the Dodgers promoted Ben Casparius over the weekend.
Across parts of three MLB seasons, Honeywell has maintained a 4.26 ERA over 80 1/3 innings. Should he stay with OKC, he will be eligible for minor league free agency at the end of the offseason unless recalled by the Dodgers.
