‘Kinds of Kindness,’ ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Sacred Fig,’ and ‘The Substance’ Among Titles in European Film Awards Selection

The European Film Academy has revealed its initial list of films eligible for consideration at the European Film Awards, scheduled for Dec. 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland. This first batch of 29 titles includes films that premiered between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. Additional films from summer and early autumn festivals, like Locarno and Venice, will be revealed in September.

Included in the selection are films such as Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” which won Cannes’ best actress and jury prizes; Miguel Gomes’ “Grand Tour,” recognized with Cannes’ best director award; and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds Of Kindness,” which earned the best actor award at Cannes.

Also featured are Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” awarded the jury special prize at Cannes; Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” which won best screenplay at Cannes; and “Armand” by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the recipient of Cannes’ Golden Camera. Matthias Glasner’s “Dying,” honored with best screenplay at Berlin, and Jaione Camborda’s “The Rye Horn,” which won best film at San Sebastian, are part of the selection as well.

This initial phase is the first of a three-stage process. The 5,000 members of the academy will review and vote on these films, with nominations for the European Film, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenwriter, Documentary, and Discovery categories announced on Nov. 5. Winners will be revealed during the ceremony on Dec. 7.

Additionally, selected films will be assessed for the Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make-up & Hair, Original Score, Sound, and Visual Effects categories by an eight-member jury of arts and crafts representatives. Nominations will not be announced for these categories.
