George Clooney Declines to Collaborate with David O. Russell, Describing Him as a ‘Miserable F—’ Who Created a Toxic Environment

At 63, George Clooney is redefining his approach to acting, emphasizing the value of “time allotment” when choosing projects. In a joint cover feature for GQ magazine with his “Wolfs” co-star Brad Pitt, Clooney revealed that the length of a project plays a crucial role in his decision-making. He noted that if he’s to spend half a year on a role, it must be worth the effort, and he prefers to collaborate with individuals who enjoy their work.

Reflecting on his past experiences, Clooney cited his role in “Three Kings,” where he endured a challenging production due to director David O. Russell’s notoriously difficult behavior. Clooney recalled that enduring a tumultuous work environment for a project was no longer acceptable.

“Five months out of your life is a lot,” he remarked, comparing it to his experience with Russell, who was known for creating a hostile set. The 1999 war film, set during the Gulf War, saw Clooney clash with Russell, leading to a notorious on-set feud. Their contentious relationship, marked by Russell’s alleged physical altercation with an extra, was eventually resolved years later.

In his latest project, “Wolfs,” Clooney plays a professional fixer alongside Pitt, premiering at the Venice Film Festival before its September release on Apple TV+ and in select theaters. Clooney also recently worked with Noah Baumbach on a film featuring Laura Dern and Adam Sandler.

Reflecting on his career longevity, he shared his surprise at still being active, recalling a conversation with Matt Damon about the rarity of sustaining a successful career. “Wolfs” will be available on Apple TV+ starting September 27, with a one-week theatrical release from September 20.
