On August 13, the Australian Parliament House will welcome Indian cinema legends Rani Mukerji and Karan Johar for a keynote address. This event sets the stage for the 15th annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), commencing on August 15.
This occasion follows the recent ratification of a co-production treaty between India and Australia. During their address, Mukerji and Johar will highlight cinema’s unique role in bridging cultural divides and uniting global audiences.
Mukerji, renowned for her diverse roles in films such as “Black,” “Hichki,” and “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” has been a Bollywood presence since the late 1990s.
However, Johar, who launched his directing career with the celebrated film “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” in 1998, has become a key figure in Indian cinema as a director, producer, and media personality. This film, featuring Mukerji, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Salman Khan, was instrumental in establishing Johar’s influential career.
Mukerji expressed her pride, stating, “Representing the Indian film fraternity at the Australian Parliament House is a honor. I look forward to discussing the rich cinematic legacy we offer and the strengthening cultural bonds between Australia and India through film.”
Johar added, “Being invited to speak at the Australian Parliament House is a profound honor. It reflects the growing global impact of Indian cinema, and I’m grateful for this opportunity to represent our vibrant storytelling tradition.”
The keynote is anticipated to attract members of parliament, ministers, and other dignitaries. IFFM festival director Mitu Bhowmik Lange remarked on the festival’s milestone, noting the importance of having Mukerji and Johar as keynote speakers for its 15th year.
