Tyler Perry’s new film, Divorce in the Black, has made an impact, with Nielsen reporting it garnered over 498 million minutes of viewing in its initial four days on Amazon Prime Video. Amazon reveals that this dramatic series has also led to more new Prime Video subscriptions in the U.S. than any previous Amazon MGM Studios production.
Following its release, Divorce in the Black quickly ascended to No. 3 on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart for the week of July 8-14, trailing behind Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Paramount+’s If.
Given the film’s duration of nearly 2.5 hours, the 498 million minutes of viewing translates to approximately 3.5 million views. The film’s popularity continues as it ranks prominently on Luminate’s movies chart, recording 93.2 million minutes watched from July 26 to August 1, its third week on the platform. (Disclosure: Variety and Luminate share ownership through Penske Media Corp.)
Featuring Meagan Good as Ava, a bank employee struggling through a troubled marriage, the film follows her as she confronts her husband’s request for a divorce. Initially devastated, Ava’s journey reveals her husband’s destructive actions and past attempts to thwart her path to true love.
Perry, who wrote and directed the film, is also a producer alongside Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu, and Dianne Ashford, under his four-picture deal with Amazon Studios.
While Amazon has not disclosed specific subscriber numbers or identified the previous top-performing Amazon MGM film, it had previously highlighted Road House for its success, amassing over 50 million viewers worldwide in its first two weeks. The remake, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, will also receive a sequel, as announced by Jennifer Salke, Amazon MGM Studio’s chief, during the first-ever upfront presentation in May.
