‘Pilot’ Dominates Korea Box Office for Second Weekend, Accumulates $20 Million

The comedy film “Pilot” from Lotte Entertainment continued its dominance at the South Korean box office for a second consecutive weekend, amassing $5.03 million and capturing nearly half of the market. According to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service, the film held a 46% market share from Friday to Sunday. In its first 12 days, “Pilot” has garnered a total of $20.3 million from over three million admissions.

The newly released Korean animated feature “Heartspring: Teenieping of Love” debuted in second place with $1.74 million. Over its initial five-day release, it has accumulated $2.68 million. In third place, “Deadpool & Wolverine” earned $842,000, benefiting from premium large format screenings. After three weeks in Korean theaters, it has racked up $14.2 million, ranking as the eighth highest film of the year and the fourth highest foreign film.

“Despicable Me 4” saw a decline of $1 million from the previous week, dropping to fourth place with $777,000 and a cumulative total of $9.27 million since its July 24 release.

The new Korean crime film “Revolver” landed in fifth place with $749,000, bringing its five-day total to $1.33 million. “Inside Out 2” added $442,000 to its earnings, totaling $60.9 million and solidifying its position as the top foreign film of the year.

Korean film “Escape” earned $185,000, with a running total of $17.6 million after a month.

Japanese animation films filled the next two spots, with “Bocci! The Rock! Movie Part 1” earning $171,000 in its opening weekend and “Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Pentagram” adding $140,000 to reach $4.97 million.

The tenth spot was claimed by preview screenings of “Twisters,” which earned $124,000 ahead of its official release on Wednesday.

The weekend box office totaled $10.9 million, a disappointing figure for the summer season, which is typically bolstered by audiences seeking relief from the heat and enjoying horror films.
