In ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ New Trailer, Witness the Transformation of Mufasa and Scar from Brothers to Foes

At D23 on Friday night, Disney disclosed an extended preview of “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the latest addition to its beloved franchise. The event kicked off with singers performing a snippet of the film’s opening song, followed by director Barry Jenkins taking the stage.

Jenkins shared his profound connection to the original film, saying, “The Lion King” left a lasting impact on me, capturing the emotional journey of a father passing on his legacy, a new pride emerging, and a young lion fulfilling his destiny. It’s an honor to tell this story.”

Jenkins also revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda will compose the film’s original songs. Miranda, who joined Jenkins to present a preview of “I Always Wanted a Brother,” received a warm standing ovation. The prequel, which is set before the 2019 live-action adaptation, explores the early life of Mufasa and his nefarious brother Scar.

Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. voice younger versions of Mufasa and Scar, while Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprises her role as Nala. Her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, will voice Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

The new trailer depicts the evolving relationship between Mufasa and Scar, highlighting their transition from brothers to adversaries. The film features a diverse cast, including Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a powerful lion with ambitious plans.

Thandiwe Newton and Lennie James voice Taka’s parents, Eshe and Obasi, while Anika Noni Rose and Keith David portray Mufasa’s parents, Afia and Masego.

Jenkins continues his collaboration with his trusted team of Nicholas Britell, Joi McMillon, and James Laxton. The 2019 remake, directed by Jon Favreau, achieved remarkable success, grossing $1.66 billion worldwide and joining the ranks of seven Disney films that surpassed the billion-dollar mark that year.
