Martin Zubimendi Chooses His Path at Real Sociedad Despite Liverpool Interest

Liverpool faced a setback as Martin Zubimendi has opted to remain with Real Sociedad, declining the opportunity to become Arne Slot’s first signing at Anfield. The 25-year-old, who had been uncertain about his future after a standout performance for Spain in Euro 2024, at the end decided against leaving his hometown club.

Liverpool had been contemplating triggering Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause, having been informed of his initial desire to depart. However, the midfielder reversed his decision under pressure from Sociedad, who, having already sold Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid and potentially losing Mikel Merino, were at risk of losing three key players this summer.

Zubimendi’s decision is a relief for the LaLiga side but a disappointment for Liverpool, who remain the only Premier League club yet to secure a signing this summer. With Zubimendi no longer an option, Liverpool may choose to conclude the transfer window relying on their existing midfield lineup.

Alexis Mac Allister is expected to fill one of the deep midfield roles in Slot’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Liverpool also views Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, and Dominik Szoboszlai as viable options, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Wataru Endo. Although Endo struggled in pre-season and drew interest from Marseille, he had shown promise last season under Jurgen Klopp.

Meanwhile, Liverpool did complete their first sale of the summer, with Fabio Carvalho moving to Brentford for a fee that could rise to £27.5 million, along with a 17.5 percent sell-on clause.
