Incorrect Stickers Lead Toyota to Recall 33,000 Vehicles

Toyota has issued a recall affecting 33,848 vehicles across 23 different models, which encompasses nearly every current Toyota model. The recall is not due to mechanical failures or software issues but stems from inaccuracies in weight rating stickers on some vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that the recall, announced on July 23, involves Gulf States Toyota, Inc., a distributor based in Texas. This distributor is responsible for Toyota vehicles and accessories, and it is this involvement that triggered the recall.

Updated labels are essential when accessories are added to vehicles, as they reflect new load capacities. For example, if a Toyota Tundra has an additional 100 pounds of off-roading gear, the vehicle’s bed can only carry 100 pounds less.

The recall was initiated after an inspection in late June discovered incorrect statistics on an updated label. Further investigation revealed that “programming errors resulted in the system using incorrect weights for multiple accessory parts,” leading to the error.

The recall affects a wide range of vehicles, from the large Sequoia SUV to the base Corolla, across the 2023 and 2024 model years. Although the recall does not specify a particular region, Gulf States Toyota’s website lists over 150 dealer locations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

The resolution for this issue is straightforward. Affected owners will receive new labels with accurate information at no cost. Notifications and updated labels are scheduled to be sent out starting September 16.
