During Friday’s D23 event in Anaheim, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni offered a glimpse of the upcoming film, “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” This feature will star Pedro Pascal as the titular Mandalorian and his beloved companion, Grogu.

Favreau teased an “all-new adventure following these two characters.” The audience erupted with excitement when Babu Frick appeared, piloting a small ship alongside Grogu, and cheered even louder as the purple alien wished “good luck.”

This film marks the first major cinematic spinoff from the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” with Favreau, who created the show, directing the movie. Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire depicted in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” the series follows a solitary bounty hunter from Mandalore as he navigates the galaxy’s outer reaches.

He encounters Grogu, a force-sensitive being of the same species as Jedi Master Yoda, and the two form a unique bond while evading remnants of the Empire and interacting with various characters from the Star Wars universe.

Favreau is producing the film with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Filoni, who is Lucasfilm’s CCO and previously directed “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” “I’ve always cherished storytelling within the rich universe that George Lucas created,” Favreau remarked earlier. “The chance to bring the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen is incredibly thrilling.”

The three-season run of “The Mandalorian” has been well-received by both fans and critics, with a fourth season already underway at Lucasfilm, expected to connect with “Ahsoka” and other Disney+ Star Wars series.

Details about the film remain sparse, including its exact place in the “Mandalorian” timeline and additional cast members aside from Pascal. “Alien” star Sigourney Weaver is reportedly in negotiations for a role, though specifics about her character are still confidential. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
