Jets WR Mike Williams Says ‘It Felt Good’ to Be Back on the Field

New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams took to the practice field on Thursday, marking his first on-field appearance since inking a one-year deal in March. The 29-year-old is on the comeback trail after suffering an ACL tear last season while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Initially placed on the physically unable to perform list as training camp began, Williams was activated just a day prior to his practice return. Reflecting on his progress, Williams shared, “It was a great feeling to finally be out there. I’ve been doing side work for a while, and it felt really good to join the team drills.”

Williams also spoke about the difficulties he faced during his recovery. “The entire process has been a real grind,” he said. “There were a lot of early mornings and late nights dedicated to getting back to this point.” Jets head coach Robert Saleh noted that Williams is progressing faster than expected in his recovery. When questioned about his readiness for the Jets’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 9, Williams responded cautiously, stating, “We’ll see.”

Williams was released by the Chargers after seven seasons, primarily due to salary cap considerations. He was set to earn $17 million in the final year of his three-year contract before his release in March. His 2023 campaign was cut short by the knee injury sustained in Week 3, where he managed 19 receptions for 249 yards and one touchdown in just three games.

Throughout his career, Williams has recorded 309 catches for 4,806 yards, averaging 15.6 yards per reception, with 31 receiving touchdowns and one rushing score. The Chargers selected him seventh overall in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Clemson, and he has been a key contributor ever since.
