Fuse Media Picks Up Trans MMA Doc ‘Unfightable’

Fuse Media is planning a strategic rollout for its newly acquired trans boxing documentary Unfightable, with a limited theatrical release scheduled for September before it debuts on ViX and Fuse later in the year.

Directed and produced by Emmy winner Marc J. Perez (known for Severe Clear and Anytown USA) and La Jaula Studios, the documentary follows Alana McLaughlin, a U.S. Army Special Forces sergeant and transgender athlete, as she navigates both her life and her narrative while competing as a professional MMA fighter.

Latino-owned Fuse Media, which secured the rights to Unfightable, announced this latest acquisition and its first foray into theatrical releases despite ongoing controversy over gender testing in boxing at the Paris Summer Olympics involving Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting in the women’s category.

“Alana McLaughlin’s journey embodies Fuse Media’s core mission: embracing diversity and inclusion while staunchly supporting individuals’ understanding of their true identity,” Miguel Roggero, chairman and CEO of Fuse Media, expressed in a statement.

Perez started documenting McLaughlin’s path in 2021 as she prepared for her debut in professional MMA, facing societal discrimination and inequality as a transgender athlete.

“We are honored to celebrate the trans community by presenting this important documentary, and we are committed to expanding the range of stories we tell across various platforms, including linear TV, streaming FAST, and now theatrical releases,” Roggero continued.

Unfightable is set for a one-week showing in New York from September 13 at the Village East Theater, followed by another week-long run in Los Angeles at Laemmle Noho 7.
