Mercedes-AMG Still Producing New V-8 Vehicles: A Cause for Celebration

Given the recent changes with the C63 and GLC63 losing their V-8 engines, many enthusiasts might be worried about AMG’s future. However, there’s no need to fret about the end of the V-8 era just yet. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that additional V-8 models are in the pipeline. While the specific model set to feature the 4.0-liter engine hasn’t been announced, it is speculated to be the CLE63.

Jerry Stamoulis, head of media relations and product communications at Mercedes-Benz Australia, reassured CarSales that the V-8 is far from being phased out: “We have more V-8 options coming. If a V-8 AMG is what you want, we still have it. There’s another model coming beyond the C63, which usually introduces new technology.”

The CLE63 could be the next AMG model to feature the 4.0-liter V-8 engine (Mercedes-AMG)

The CLE63, a reincarnation of the CLK combining coupe and convertible versions of the C-Class and E-Class, already offers a larger engine than the C-Class, with the AMG CLE53 featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. It’s widely anticipated that the hotter CLE63 will retain the V-8. Earlier this year, Autocar reported that Mercedes’ senior officials indicated the top model would use the M177 engine with mild-hybrid technology.

Initially, there were rumors that the CLE63 was planned to use a plug-in hybrid system with a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, similar to the C63. This shift would have been contentious for those who value engine displacement. The AMG “53” model uses a six-cylinder engine, so a smaller engine in the “63” might have caused confusion.

Despite the rumored changes, the CLE63 is expected to debut by the end of 2024 in both coupe and convertible forms. As for the next-generation E63, it remains uncertain what engine will be used. AMG CEO Michael Schiebe mentioned about a year ago that the E63 would not feature a V-8, likely opting for a plug-in hybrid inline-six or a similar setup, which could provide more power than the CLE63. Nonetheless, a smaller engine might not appeal to all potential buyers.
