Initially, Jamie Lee Curtis cited Cate Blanchett as the primary reason for her involvement in Borderlands, but the collaboration turned out to be more rewarding than she had anticipated.
Curtis shared with The Hollywood Reporter at a Los Angeles fan event that she and Blanchett developed a friendship during the film’s production. “I didn’t expect we’d become close,” Curtis admitted. “In the film industry, you meet people, you work together, and then everyone goes their separate ways. But working with Cate was a fantastic experience, and it’s been wonderful to connect with someone I’ve long admired. We’ve had some deeply personal moments, and she’s truly an extraordinary person.”
The two actresses star in the Eli Roth-directed adaptation of the popular video game, alongside Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Edgar Ramírez, and Florian Munteanu. Hart reflected on the opportunity, saying, “It was an honor to work with such incredible talents like Cate and Jamie. I learned a lot from them, and it’s great to say I’ve shared the screen with these two icons at this point in my career.”
Roth explained that his approach to the adaptation was to capture the purpose of the game, emphasizing its chaotic and humorous nature, rather than going for a dark, dystopian tone. “We stayed true to the game’s design and details, but we also took creative liberties with the casting and storyline. My goal was to make a big, entertaining movie that audiences can enjoy,” Roth stated.
To those skeptical about the film adaptation, Roth encouraged viewers to “keep an open mind and enjoy the journey. While the game is R-rated, this movie is PG-13, making it accessible to a broader audience. If you want to introduce others to the game, take them to see the movie. It’s a unique story with beloved characters, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.”
