The Zebras: Dark Start,’ an Indian indie film that examines artificial intelligence’s (AI) profound influence on the fashion world, has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Double Exposure.

Helmed by Aneek Chaudhuri, known for “White,” this film weaves together the experiences of a seasoned photographer (Sharib Hashmi from “The Family Man”), a filmmaker (Usha Banerjee from “Jharokh”), and a supermodel (Priyanka Sarkar from “Robin’s Kitchen”) in a near-future scenario where AI dominates daily existence.

Chaudhuri disclosed to Variety that the film is inspired by real tragedies in India’s fashion industry, where AI-induced displacements led to models ending their lives. “Crafting ‘The Zebras’ was an effort to address these harrowing situations with compassion,” Chaudhuri remarked.

“The severity of the AI crisis now rivals that of global pandemics like COVID or the Spanish flu. AI has evolved from an auxiliary tool to a pervasive force, with people metaphorically ensnared in its grip, surrendering their autonomy.”

Producers Akhil Murali and Ashik Murali from Yulin Productions hope the film will ignite meaningful dialogue. “We aim to foster a movement that encourages critical examination of technology’s role and its potential to benefit humanity without sacrificing our core values,” said Akhil Murali. The film will debut at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) and is slated for a limited U.S. theatrical run starting September 13 at Laemmle theaters, marking its Oscar-qualifying run.

Gregory Gardner, CEO of Double Exposure, stated, “Our commitment lies in championing independent, international films such as ‘The Zebras’ to achieve Academy Award eligibility. Theatrical distribution remains the most effective way to highlight these films despite a saturated streaming market, offering the best viewing experience.”

Following its U.S. release, the film will be introduced to Indian audiences, aiming to stimulate discussions on AI ethics and encourage collaboration with educational entities, tech innovators, and policymakers.
