Glen Powell is keeping busy with no signs of slowing down. Following the box office success of Twisters, the actor is now eyeing another major film project. He is in talks to possibly star alongside Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega in a yet-to-be-titled movie directed by J.J. Abrams, marking Abrams’ return to feature film directing since Star Wars.
According to Deadline, this new project is still in its early stages and will be produced by Warner Brothers and Bad Robot Productions, Abrams’ company. While Ortega is close to finalizing her deal, Powell is also negotiating his participation.
The details of the film are being kept tightly under wraps, hinting at the studio’s confidence in its blockbuster potential. What’s known is that the film won’t involve time travel, and Abrams will be penning the script. This marks Ortega’s first collaboration with Abrams, while Powell has previously worked with him on The Blue Angels.
Given their recent successes, teaming up with Abrams seems like a natural progression for Powell and Ortega. Powell, who has shown his ability to lead in big-budget films like Twisters, is solidifying his status as a top Hollywood leading man. Meanwhile, Ortega’s upcoming role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will further prove her ability to headline major films, building on her performances in Wednesday and Scream VI.
For Powell, this is a bold career move as he continues to establish himself as a leading figure in Hollywood. When not promoting Twisters, he has been filming the A24 project Huntington in South Africa and is set to star in the Hulu comedy series Chad Powers.
He will also lead Edgar Wright’s Running Man in London, and now, a secretive J.J. Abrams movie seems to be on his horizon. As for Ortega, she’s equally busy with her own A24 project, Death of a Unicorn, another season of Wednesday, and other high-profile projects like Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun and a film with The Weeknd. Despite their packed schedules, the opportunity to work with Abrams is likely too exciting to pass up.
Details on the film, including its title and release date, remain scarce, so it may be some time before it hits theaters. In the meantime, fans can catch Glen Powell in Twisters and look forward to Jenna Ortega’s performance in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, set for release on September 6th, 2024.
