Tesla Bot ‘Optimus’ Generation 1 Makes Its Debut in Malaysia

Tesla is not only advancing its electric vehicle lineup but is also making significant strides in autonomous and robotics technology, remarkably with its Optimus humanoid robot.

Displayed recently at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur was the earlier Gen 1 version of Optimus, which first appeared in March 2023, preceding the Gen 2 model revealed in December of the same year. The Gen 1 follows the ‘Bumblebee’ prototype introduced during Tesla’s AI Day event in September 2022.

Distinguishing features of the Gen 1 include its broad V-shaped upper chest, while the Gen 2 model sports ‘Tesla’ branding in this area. The Gen 2 also has more refined sculpting to better resemble human pectorals, along with arms that are more anatomically accurate and legs with a more streamlined design.

Tesla describes Optimus as a humanoid robot intended for repetitive, tedious, or hazardous tasks that would otherwise be performed by humans. Its human-like form allows it to handle tools, transport objects, and operate in manufacturing environments.

According to Analytics Insight, the Gen 1 Optimus stands 173 cm tall and weighs 57 kg, whereas the Gen 2 is slightly taller at 178 cm and weighs 59 kg. The Gen 1 model can walk, wave, and dance, while the Gen 2 offers enhanced mobility in its arms, hands, and fingers, with additional capabilities such as sorting colored blocks and performing yoga poses.

Both versions of Optimus have a load capacity of 20 kg and are equipped with the same AI system used in Tesla vehicles. Gen 2 was recently featured at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai from July 4 to 7.
