Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest twisted film, Kinds of Kindness, which hit theaters in June, will soon be available for home viewing. The film is set to release on digital platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+ on August 27, with a Blu-ray/DVD release following on October 8.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Kinds of Kindness presents a trio of increasingly bizarre storylines. According to the logline, the film follows “a man without choice who tries to take control of his life, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person after being lost at sea, and a woman searching for someone with a special ability.”
The ensemble cast features Lanthimos regular Emma Stone, fresh off her role in his Oscar-nominated Poor Things, alongside Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Joe Alwyn, and Hunter Schafer, with each playing new roles in different segments. Yorgos Stefanakos’ character, RMF, connects all three parts.
The digital and physical releases will include bonus content, such as a featurette titled “Takes All Kinds: The Vision of Kinds of Kindness,” offering behind-the-scenes insights into the film’s costumes, cinematography, music, and deleted scenes.
The film received mixed reviews during its festival run, with some critics finding it too strange even for Lanthimos, who is known for his unconventional narratives. However, Variety’s Peter DeBruge praised it, noting Lanthimos’s ability to “keep you squirming for nearly three hours in a biting power parody,” with a unique rhythm that builds tension more through surprise than suspense.
