Toyota’s New Electric Van is Here — and it’s Not What You’d Imagine

The Toyota Proace Max marks Toyota’s entry into the European market with its first all-electric heavy-duty van. Recently launched, this commercial vehicle comes equipped with a 110-kilowatt-hour battery and a front-mounted electric motor delivering 200 kilowatts of power, offering a WLTP-rated range of 260 miles.

If this setup feels familiar, it’s because the Proace Max shares its underpinnings with Stellantis vehicles like the Fiat Ducato and Ram ProMaster EVs, differing mainly in branding and minor exterior details.

To meet the stringent average carbon dioxide emissions limits set to take effect in the EU next year, Toyota has opted to collaborate with Stellantis rather than develop its electric van for the European market.

This partnership has resulted in the Proace Max being essentially a rebadged Fiat Ducato, or Ram ProMaster, with Toyota’s logo. It’s a strategic move to meet emissions regulations without the need for an entirely new platform.

Adding to Toyota’s lineup in Europe, the Proace Max joins the Proace, another Stellantis-based vehicle derived from the Citroen Jumpy. There’s speculation that the Proace Max could eventually be rebranded for the U.S. market under the ProMaster City name, though details remain uncertain.

The Proace Max features fast-charging capabilities, reaching 80% charge in just 55 minutes at 150 kW, and includes an 11 kW on-board charger for AC charging.

Priced at around £60,180 in the UK, this electric van is available in various configurations, including a chassis cab or panel van, with a diesel variant also offered.

The interior mirrors that of its Stellantis siblings, featuring a 10-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and various driver-assistance features.
