The Asahi Shimbun: JDI Introduces World’s First ‘2 Vision Display’ System for Cars

A major Japanese LCD manufacturer has disclosed a groundbreaking car dashboard display capable of showing different images based on the viewer’s angle. For instance, the driver can see the navigation system, while the passenger simultaneously watches a TV program.

This innovation, named the “2 Vision Display” by Japan Display Inc. (JDI), also features a touch function that can identify the operator. According to JDI, this is the world’s first product of its kind, despite existing technologies that allow multiple screens to be viewed at once.

However, previous versions struggled with brightness and resolution issues in direct sunlight. JDI’s new display addresses these problems by leveraging advanced image processing technology, making it an integral part of in-car systems.

The touch panel employs proprietary technology to recognize the user, ensuring that only authorized individuals can operate the display. For instance, the passenger cannot control the driver’s side screen, which enhances security.

With the rise of automated driving, the way people utilize their time in vehicles is evolving, driving demand for innovative in-vehicle displays. In response, JDI is targeting sales of 100 billion yen (approximately $682.2 million) by 2030 for products incorporating this new technology.

The company is already in talks with European and Chinese automakers and anticipates the technology to be featured in vehicles produced from 2025 onwards.

At an Aug. 2 news conference, JDI chairman and CEO Scott Callon highlighted the uniqueness of the technology and described the sales target as conservative.
