Vikings Defender Anticipates Retirement at Season’s Conclusion

The Minnesota Vikings underwent numerous changes this offseason. Their long-time quarterback Kirk Cousins joined the Atlanta Falcons in free agency, while they brought in rival running back Aaron Jones from the Green Bay Packers and saw veteran edge rusher Danielle Hunter move to the Houston Texans after nine years with the Vikings.

One of the team’s most iconic players is reportedly planning to retire at the end of the upcoming season, signaling more changes ahead.

According to Charley Walters of The Pioneer Press, there’s “no doubt the coming season will be the last” for star safety Harrison Smith, who is about to start his 13th season with the Vikings.

Smith, now 35, has consistently demonstrated health and excellence since being drafted 29th overall in the 2012 draft from Notre Dame. His 34 career interceptions are the second-highest among active players, just behind Patrick Peterson’s 36.

Earlier this year, Smith signed a restructured 2-year, $10.25 million contract that extends through the next season, but the Vikings can opt out of the deal before the 2025 season if Smith decides to keep playing.

Despite the inevitability of this news, it still comes as a surprise, especially given Smith’s recent contract extension. For over a decade, he has led this defense, and it’s hard to envision the team without him in the secondary on Sundays. Vikings fans, enjoy this season, as Smith’s time on the field appears to be nearing its end.
