Even after announcing his retirement over a decade ago, Steven Soderbergh remains a powerhouse in filmmaking. The renowned director, known for the Ocean’s series, continues to be active, with his latest film, the horror-thriller Presence, having premiered at Sundance earlier this year but not yet officially released.
Despite this, Soderbergh has already scheduled his next project, a spy drama titled Black Bag. According to Deadline, the film, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, is set for a March 14, 2025, release.
The script for Black Bag is penned by David Koepp, Soderbergh’s collaborator on Kimi and a remarkable writer behind Jurassic Park. While plot details remain scarce, the title hints at intrigue beyond its name.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Regé-Jean Page (Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves), Marisa Abela (Back to Black), Naomie Harris (28 Days Later), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), and Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia!), alongside Blanchett and Fassbender.
Produced by Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs, Black Bag marks a reunion for Soderbergh with Blanchett, his lead in The Good German, and Fassbender, from Haywire.
While we await the film’s release, Blanchett will appear in Eli Roth’s Borderlands on August 9, and Fassbender will star in the Irish comedy-drama Kneecap, opening in the UK on August 23.
