Jamaica’s Copa America Journey Ends with 3-1 Loss to Ecuador

Ecuador secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Jamaica in their Copa America Group B match, with goals from Piero Hincapié, Páez, and Minda. The win marked Ecuador’s first in the tournament since 2016, while Jamaica remains winless in the competition.

Ecuador took the lead in the 21st minute when Hincapié’s centered ball deflected off a Jamaican defender and into the net. The goal was a result of Ecuador’s relentless pressure and teamwork, as they dominated possession in the early stages of the game.

Páez doubled the lead with a penalty kick in stoppage time, becoming the youngest player in the tournament to score at 17 years old. The penalty was awarded after a video review showed a handball by Jamaican defender Greg Leigh.

Jamaica pulled one back in the 54th minute through Michail Antonio’s impressive volley. Antonio’s goal was a testament to his skill and potential, as he turned and shot the ball into the net with precision.

However, Ecuador sealed the win in the dying minutes of the game when Minda scored his first goal in six appearances, slotting the ball past Jamaican goalkeeper Jahmali Waite.

The result leaves Venezuela atop the group with six points, while Ecuador and Mexico are tied at three points each. Jamaica, meanwhile, has yet to secure a point in the tournament and faces an uphill battle to advance.

Ecuador will face Mexico in their final group match on Sunday, while Jamaica takes on Venezuela. Despite the loss, Jamaica’s Antonio impressed with his fourth goal in 16 appearances, showcasing his skill and potential. However, it was Ecuador’s day, as they celebrated their long-awaited Copa America win.
