The 2024 Toyota Sequoia Platinum is a paradox – a fun yet flawed SUV that excels on both highway and off-road terrain. With its hybrid powertrain and TRD Off-Road package, it’s a capable and comfortable family hauler that’s hard to resist.
However, its low-hanging front air dam and limited third-row space are remarkable drawbacks. On the road, the Sequoia is a surprise package. Its twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 hybrid engine produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, making it a joy to drive.
The integrated electric motor allows for silent cruising, and the TRD Off-Road package adds Falken all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, and skid plates for enhanced off-road capability.
Despite its impressive specs, the Sequoia’s low-hanging front air dam limits its off-road potential. With only eight inches of clearance, it’s a vulnerability that seems at odds with the SUV’s otherwise rugged design.
Inside, the Sequoia shines with a comfortable and intuitive interior. The second-row captain’s chairs are heated and cooled, and the 14.0-inch screen is easy to cross. However, the third-row seat is less impressive, with limited space and comfort.
Overall, the Sequoia is a mixed bag. Its hybrid powertrain and off-road capabilities make it a standout, but its limitations in third-row space and off-road clearance hold it back. Despite these flaws, the Sequoia remains a compelling choice for families and off-road enthusiasts alike.
